So what does Psalm 1 tell us about God?
The water that flows by the tree today is not the same water that flowed past it yesterday although it has the same source.
The chaff that was winnowed out yesterday is not the same as the chaff that needs winnowing today!
The blessed man did not follow the path of the wicked yesterday, but the temptation for him to do so is there today!
The mockers haven't moved on. Their voices are still in his head. They are still beckoning to him.
Think about the Lord's Prayer. It's not something that should be prayed once and that's it, we have lifetime blanket covering!
Not so.
It is something we need to pray each and every day. Deliver us from evil. Protect us O Lord from the evil one and his schemes. Satan want's nothing more that to trap us and trip us up, to bring us into the company of the wicked so that we turn away from God.
Like the tree, goodness is something that grows, each day, fed and watered, filled daily with the power of God's Holy Spirit!
It's about God's daily provision!
Realise here that it is in God's heart to provide for us, through His Grace, through His Mercy. So that, not only are we with Him as a son or a daughter, but that we grow in Him, each and every day. Like the tree that has been planted by the stream.
And when those doubts flood in, when we find ourselves in negative spaces, listening to negative voices, feeling the hurts, bearing the bruises, then we should turn to Him in our hearts and our minds, and raise our voices in thanksgiving and praise so that we are filled fresh with the Holy Spirit.
But unlike the chaff that is without substance nor indeed foundation, the tree grows strong where God plants it, just as we grow strong where God puts us, knowing that in Him we have close by the nourishment we need to make that growth a reality.
But it is up to us to recognise that this is new every day, that we have to seek it out fresh everyday. Like the manna that was collected fresh each morning, God's provision, fresh and vibrant. It is up to us to find it through prayer, through praise and worship, through thankfulness, through meditating on His Word, each and every day.
How much more the joy when we recognise His supply is boundless?
You see, the blessed man at the start of this very first of the Psalms is like us, and we are intended to identify with him. The things that God does for him, God will do for us. We just have to be open, attentive, willing to obey, willing to follow. He will do the rest, not through our strength but through His.
Amen.
